Department of Biotechnology

Department of Biotechnology

The Department of Biotechnology at UCT Prague offers education in both traditional and modern biotechnology, from brewing, distilling and winemaking to pharmaceutical production, environmental protection and alternative fuels. Studying with us starts with hands-on work in laboratories equipped with modern instruments for advanced analytical, biochemical, microbiological, separation and cultivation methods, and continues with involvement in real research from the very first semesters. Our bachelor's graduates usually go on to master's and doctoral studies, where they gain deeper specialisation, independence in research and often experience at a university abroad, thanks to our extensive network of partnerships and double-degree opportunities.

About the Department
Research

Research

The department's research covers biotechnological processes in their full breadth – from the behaviour of the biological agent and the unit operations used in modern biotechnology, including downstream processing, bioengineering aspects and the modelling and simulation of bioprocesses, to the application of biotechnological processes in the food, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemical industries and in environmental protection.

The department currently runs grant projects funded by the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR) and the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TAČR), ranging from the inhibitory effect of Monascus pigments on bacteria of the genus Clostridium to sustainable polyurethanes produced with the help of enzymes.

Study Abroad and Double Degree

Study Abroad and Double Degree

Studying at the Department of Biotechnology does not stop at the doors of UCT Prague. Many of our students spend part of their studies abroad, on ERASMUS exchanges and on double-degree programmes that allow them to earn, alongside their Czech degree, a diploma from a partner university in Italy, Switzerland or Sweden. It is a chance to experience a different approach to science, work in a different laboratory, talk about your field in another language, and come back with a perspective you cannot gain at home. Today, experience abroad is part of what sets apart graduates who merely know their field from those who can hold their own in it anywhere in the world.
