As the Department name indicates, the Department of Biotechnology is engaged in education, science, and consultancy activities in biotechnologies from the chemical, technical, and engineering points of view. The Department's core activities are in brewing, biotechnologies for environmental protection, alternative fuel production, issues of biofilms, and the production of biodetergents and enzymes.

[obsah] => Our Department offers higher education in fields of traditional as well as modern biotechnologies, e.g. chemical and pharmaceutical industries and environmental protection, and bioengineering. The Department is accredited to provide three-year Bachelor programmes, two-year Master programmes, and Doctoral programmes.
Interested students can participate in scientific and research work at the Department from the outset of their studies.
Given a wide range of contacts in Europe and worldwide, it is possible to apply for study or research fellowships.

Teaching Activity
Supervising BSc, MSc and PhD theses, teaching in the courses: Biotechnology in food industry (MSc course), Food technologies and biotechnology (BSc course), Downstream processing in biotechnologies (PhD course), Fermentation technology (PhD course), Biotechnological production of chemicals, materials and energy (PhD course).
Current Research Topics
Operations of fermentation industry, cultivation techniques, optimization and control of bioprocesses. Fermentation production of ethanol, acetone a butanol. Biosynthesis of lactic and itaconic acids, their isolation and purification. Optimization of distillery technology with respect to stillage exploitation. Application of thermophilic microorganisms for biodegradation organic industrial wastes. Immobilization of microbial cells and their application in bioreactors. Production of microbial biomass (especially from agricultural and industrial raw materials and wastes. Optimization of ergosterol biosynthesis (provitamin D2) by the yeast cell.
